For civil engineers, like Regard Yakou, the education requirements start long before they even take their first college course. Like all engineering jobs, civil engineering falls into the category of science.
This means that to become a civil engineer you need to take math and science classes starting in high school. Physics, chemistry, trigonometry, and algebra are all classes that play a role in the daily tasks of a civil engineer. You will not only have to take these classes in high school, but you will have to do well in them if you dream of becoming a civil engineer.
To become a civil engineer, you will have to earn a degree in civil engineering. Depending on how far you want to go on the field will determine the level of education you will need to complete. For the most basic entry positions, you will need to earn, at a minimum, an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technologies.
However, many employers will require that you have a Bachelor in Civil Engineering. This will require you to take four to five years of college level courses in general civil engineering. A Master’s in Civil Engineering can be obtained by those who want to develop new technologies or work as a professor.
After earning your degree, you may need to work as a project manager, like Regard Yakou, in order to receive your Professional Engineer’s License, a certification that you must have if you are planning to provide service to the public.
